Internap Taps Equinix to Expand in China

May 3rd, 2016 by · 2 Comments

Internap is expanding its service reach into China with the help of its larger neighbor in the market, Equinix.  Internap has joined Equinix’s channel partner program as well as the company’s cloud exchange, and will be offering its China Performance IP solution via Equinix in Hong Kong.

Internap hopes to leverage its route optimization technology to identify and provide the fastest route into China across multiple carriers.  Having spent time in China experiencing the international bandwidth limitations through the company’s ISPs, there is definitely room for such improvement whether reaching into clouds or just browsing in general.  Internap will also be able to resell Equinix space in China to its current customer base, helping them handle the multi-site international needs of clients today.

Revenues for Internap have been hovering at or just below $80M quarterly for some time now, with analysts projecting a slight decline in first quarter numbers.  Adding reach into the potentially huge Chinese market could help with that trend a bit.

This was talked about in the BackReflection newsletter last week.

While this sounds good, there’s not much to see here but a dying company grasping for straws trying to sound like they’re doing something relevant. All of their technical talent left the company over the past year, and they’re slowly beginning to wind down the network and discontinue service points and interconnects, leading to connectivity getting worse and not better.

Might explain why they’re trading at under $2 a share, compared to $10 this time last year.
