Ciena’s Blue Planet Gets a DevOps Toolkit

May 24th, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

In the world of SDN and NFV, Ciena today revealed a new addition to its Blue Planet network and service orchestration platform. They have added a DevOps Toolkit to the mix, hoping to enable the developers at their ecosystem partners to create and on-board new VNFs and other pieces of the puzzle rather than do it all themselves.

Few technology shifts promises as much change to the infrastructure world over the next few years as do SDN and NFV. One of the biggest changes they may bring to telecom is the modern software development cycle. If done correctly, it could dramatically change the way upgrades happen both for consumer-facing services and for internal company operations. But to unlock that potential, one has to have the appropriate tools for it.

A DevOps toolkit is a big piece of the puzzle, offering a roadmap with templates and shortcuts to developers looking to dive into integrating a software package with their own. It’s more far-reaching than a mere API, which is often something of a ‘if you really must do it yourself, then ok here are the hooks’ gesture.

Ciena hopes that enabling the people doing such development will more firmly and quickly establish BluePlanet’s place in the market than its larger rivals can with a more top-down approach.  Ciena bought Cyan last year, adding its orchestration suite and boosting its efforts in the NFV space, and have been aggressively investing further in the space since.
