euNetworks Deploys Ciena’s 200G

July 27th, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

It seems like just a year or two ago that 100G became commercially viable, yet technology has moved on already.  euNetworks today announced that it has deployed 200G, with the London metro area getting it first.

euNetworks has tapped Ciena’s WaveLogic 3 Extreme packet-optical platform, putting 200G per 50GHz DWDM channels to work between Slough to the west of London to the Docklands to the east.  They have a cloud customer already using the new connectivity option, one that has 1.2Tb of the 100GE variety there already and 6Tb of lit capacity with euNetworks across Europe.  They didn’t say which one, but there can’t be too many cloud providers out there provisioning that much capacity.

Sensing that this is just the beginning of a trend, euNetworks is now targeting such mega-customers with a new offering, called euSpectrum, that provides the option for multi-Terabit links between the major cities across its footprint.  The introduction of 200G gives them some bigger building blocks, but doubling the capacity of 100G will only take them so far, and 400G and 1Tb must also be in the cards.
