CenturyLink Takes the NFV Plunge with Cyan

March 12th, 2015 by · 1 Comment

In what will probably become a familiar type of press release this year, a service provider is launching NFV service to the enterprise. In this case, it’s CenturyLink making its move, and it is a big Tier 1 win for Cyan.

CenturyLink will be leveraging Cyan’s Blue Planet NFV Orchestrator to provide what they are calling their Programmable Services Backbone. With it, CenturyLink will be able to launch VNFs from multiple vendors that enhance their existing offerings.

NFV promises to shake up some parts of the enterprise and SMB network and IT world, making data appliances and CPE sexy once more. Cyan has been working hard to build a multi-vendor solution that will sit at the heart of the revolution, should it pan out the way many think it will.  Winning CenturyLink’s favor is clearly a crucial moment for them.

Cyan is not the only one chasing NFV of course, nor is CenturyLink the only service provider racing to establish itself.  We’ll be hearing from others shortly I’m sure.  No timeframes were mentioned for CenturyLink’s NFV offering just yet, although they’ve been testing it for some months now I believe.

This is not going to be a tentative roll-out of a new technology the industry isn’t quite sure how to turn into revenue or profits.  It’s going to gain momentum quickly.
