tw telecom Expands in KC, Atlanta

July 25th, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Now that all the immediate aftermath of the Level 3 merger announcement has subsided and we wait a quarter for the deal to close, tw telecom is pulling everyone’s focus back down to the company’s main operational task for 2014. That would be the expansion of its metro fiber footprint in markets across the country, a few the details of two of those markets being announced today.

In the Kansas City metro area, they will be adding loops up both out into Overland Park and across the river into North Kansas City. Along the way the new routes will pass through Mission, Fairway, Olathe, and Leawood. They’l also be bringing fiber to a new 300-acre industrial park at the intersection of I-635 and Missouri Highway 9.

Meanwhile, in the Atlanta metro area they’ll be pushing north into Marietta and Kennesaw, west into Austel, and to the south as well. Atlanta is one of Zayo’s biggest dark fiber markets of course, which is where tw telecom is getting the fiber from for their expansion.

There are also three more brand new markets yet to be formally announced: Boston, Cleveland, and Philadelphia. I still find it amazing that tw telecom managed to reach this stage of their evolution as a national service provider without actually operating fiber in three NFL cities.
