Fiber Bytes: SummitIG, tw telecom, Integra, Lightower, FiberLight

June 11th, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

In this roundup, an interconnection, some new franchise rights, two state contract vehicles, and an update from rural Texas.

SummitIG and Hurricane Electric have announced an interconnection agreement. That pairs a regional dark fiber builder in Virginia with a global IP backbone. SummitIG will therefore be able to offer its customers a direct pipe into Hurricane Electric’s network, and no doubt they’ll be looking for relationships with other IP backbones.

Some more metro fiber buildout work is in tw telecom’s future in the Pacific Northwest, not that they have any trouble finding expansion projects these days. The city of Auburn, Washington has granted them the rights to run fiber on all rights of way. Auburn lies between Seattle and Tacoma, so this isn’t exactly virgin territory.

Integra has picked up a second contract award in the state of California under the CALNET 3 umbrella. They will be providing Ethernet, private line, and internet services to state agencies, non-profits, and other public sector customers throughout the state, following up on a similar award during the first phase back in November.

On the opposite coast, Lightower has been named as an authorized vendor for the state of New Jersey. They’l be selling Ethernet, SONET, and wavelengths to state and quasi-state agencies, educational institutions, and local governments. Most of Lightower’s New Jersey footprint came from the Sidera purchase of course.

And down in Texas, FiberLight offered another update on its Texas buildout. They’ve now hooked up 600 cell towers and installed almost 5,500 route miles across the state. Recent connections have brought its network into Victoria and Bryan, and they have begun the first phase of 1,800 miles of network deep out into West Texas. By the end of the year they plan to have 6,500 route miles complete and hook up another 275 cell towers. They’ll also be hooking up Data Foundry’s Austin facility soon.
