Integra Goes Inorganic, Buys ProTel

Out west, Integra has made itself a deal, acquiring Utah-based ProTel NetWorks. Protel’s main focus is managed voice and UC systems for enterprises. They maintain a close partnership with the cloud communications provider Mitel, which itself recently merged with Aastra.

With its western regional fiber network, Integra gets a fair amount of attention in M&A circles as a possible target. But since starting the shift of its business plan toward fiber and toward larger enterprises and wholesale customers, the company has been actively looking as a buyer as well. I hadn’t expected a deal at the business voice services level, but it seems logical enough.

The acquisition of ProTel boosts their managed voice and unified communications capabilities, which will help them further their offensive with the larger enterprises they now favor. It also suggests that there may be additional targets out there that Integra might go after to fill out the cloud-based services that fit into its portfolio.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but ProTel’s website says it has some 20 employees based in Salt Lake City so in terms of raw scale it won’t shift all that much initially. Integra will no doubt be looking to take that core team and expand it to reach deeper into the rest of its service territory.
