Zayo Launches zTech

October 1st, 2013 by · 3 Comments

Zayo added another aspect to its bandwidth business with the launch of a professional services product suite. Their new zTech offerings will take all that network build and operations expertise and give it another outlet.

That means that customers will be able to hire out their network design and engineering, installations, procurement, fiber route construction, remote hands, monitoring, building access, and other technical support services. That’s both on and off of Zayo’s own network footprint of course.

You’d think they’ve got enough projects to keep them busy these days at Zayo, what with all the organic expansions and M&A consolidation activity going on. But another channel for revenue to grow surely can’t hurt.

Gotta admit… I’m not really sure what this is… So are they basically installing new network for individual companies (which they do already) except in the end they sell off that asset and just charge a maintenance fee for monitoring, etc… for some predisclosed amount of time?

Rob, thanks for posting this. Fibermancer — good questions. Let me explain.

Zayo has a number of customers who desire to own network, such as dark fiber, technical space, and interconnects. They also want to buy and run the wavelength and/or Ethernet equipment.

Though they desire to own these assets, they don’t necessarily want to or have the capability of managing the finished network. That is, they don’t have feet on the street to do the physical installation work or to attend to maintenance and repairs. They also might not have a NOC function to oversee the operation of the network.

As a result, we’ve found ourselves responding to customer requests to provide professional services e.g., remote hands or network surveillance. As this came up more and more frequently, we decided we should productize it and offer it as a service.

The service we offer is not limited to where the customer is purchasing Zayo network. The zTech service is tailored to serve the broader set of customer requirements.

Please post if you have additional questions.

Dan, thank you for the response; it really does clear things up for me. Always good to see companies responding to the marketplace!
