DANTE and Infinera Deploy 2Tbps in 12 Minutes

Demonstrations can be a bit dry, so over in Europe DANTE and Infinera have put provisioning bandwidth in the context of either sportscar performance (from zero to a Terabit in less than twelve minutes) or the cooking of mashed potatoes (not quite done yet), whichever floats your boat.

The demonstration was performed on a busy 671km stretch of the GÉANT production network between Amsterdam and Frankfurt, and consisted of the installation of four of Infinera’s DTN-X 500Gbps super-channels and the provisioning of a 100GbE service over top of it.  It took less than twelve minutes, probably much less than it took for them to put the video up on YouTube.  The gear is still in there, and carrying production traffic for the Euro NREN community.

Now, I’m not sure just how often it’s really going to matter how many minutes it takes to deploy a couple of terabit.  But in a world where SDN and cloud are trying to turn the lower layers of the internet into a giant black box, provisioning times are mattering more than ever.  Besides, a stunt’s a stunt and if it involves mashed potatoes then it can’t be all bad.  And I think this time they can even beat out that poor tired African carrier pigeon with a flash drive strapped to its leg.
