Colo Bytes: SubTropolis, CyrusOne, Colo Atl, Telx, Interxion

Time for a Friday look at some of the news this week from the colo business from SubTropolis, Cyrus One, Colo Atl, Telx, and Interxion:

Hunt Midwest has got itself a direct fiber connection for SubTropolis from midwestern fiber operator Unite Private Networks. SubTropolis is a gigantic underground business complex that includes a 200K square foot data center. Underground in this context means down inside a 270 million year old limestone deposit mined by the room and pillar method, leaving behind vast amounts of dry, cool space – just 10 minutes from downtown Kansas City, MO. Yep, this is a Kansas City item that doesn’t involve Google for once.

CyrusOne has been very busy lately, commissioning their fourth site in the past 7 months today. The massively modular new building at their Houston West site has been under construction since September 2012, and will go online this month.

In Atlanta, Colo Atl has also announced the completion of a buildout at 55 Marietta Street they’ve been working on to meet demand. The extra space gives them more colo and data center square footage, but also a new conference facility and meet-me area operated by Colo Atl’s sister company the Georgia Technology Center.

In New Jersey, Telx signed up a new tenant in Clifton. DBR360’s public and private cloud solutions are now available at its NJR2 facility and will also be available at NJR3 when it’s complete. DBR360’s presence will add to Telx’s cloud and connectivity ecosystem, something that is occupying the time and effort of much of the sector.

And, InterXion (NYSE:INXN, news) is providing space to Cancer Research UK, which is now running all of its primary systems from the company’s London data center campus. The UK charity has slimmed down its IT infrastructure to a thin client environment with virtualized desktops and storage, allowing it to focus on its core activities.
