CDN Roundup 10/17: CDNetworks, Akamai, Highwinds

Some quick-takes on news from the content delivery segment:

CDNetworks launched a new Russian acceleration product aimed at giving companies extended reach into the giant but still difficult to enter market. The Korean-based CDNetworks is nowadays a part of the KDDI empire, and has been putting resources into Russia via its partner MegaFon. Just a couple months ago, it was just 6 PoPs. For its part, MegaFon is looking to localize more traffic in order to cut its international transit expenses in what has become a very competitive market.

Akamai (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings) continued to chip away at the retail sector, signing up Beyond the Rack. The online shopping club is leveraging Akamai’s portfolio to increase security for its online presence without sacrificing scale. Beyond-the-Rack apparently has a very unique traffic profile, with ‘flash sales’ that see most of the response in a matter of just hours and half their catalog changing daily.

And Highwinds added another gaming customer via a contract with GameFly. Highwinds will be delivering GameFly’s entire portfolio of downloadable video games over its specialty GDN, or Game Delivery Network. They introduced the GDN last August, and upgraded it over the summer.
