M&A Journal: Birch Tucks In Another Deal

August 13th, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Birch Communications (news) made its 16th acquisition in recent years this morning, announcing an agreement to purchase Daystar Communications.  The move follows a refinancing just last month that replenished the company’s coffers and paved the way for further M&A.

DayStar is a facilities-based CLEC that serves mainly southwest florida via a fiber-based network extending from Tampa south to Naples.   They operate a Metaswitch-based network focused on the SMB market, with several thousand customers that will help Birch scale its efforts in the region.

The Florida market has been one of Birch’s main targets for this sort of deal.  Last summer they bought the assets of Orlando-based Cordia, and over the winter they made a deal for AstroTel in the Tampa area.  Financial details were not disclosed, but the purchase is expected to close later this quarter.
