EdgeCast Integrates Google’s PageSpeed

June 26th, 2012 by · 1 Comment

Today EdgeCast Networks (news) [a subsidiary of Verizon (NYSE:VZ, news, filings)] enhanced its content delivery network further, leveraging Google’s PageSpeed technology at the edge. That will allow the CDN’s customers to apply Google’s ‘best practice’ optimization techniques at the edge on-the-fly without changing the code underlying their site content.

PageSpeed is one of Google’s more visible attempts to ‘make the web fast’, but my own exposure to it has been to analyze how to change my code to speed things up. Having that be automatic, with the logic applied on edge servers will enable a much wider range of content on the web to gain speed benefits without going to as much trouble. EdgeCast says early testing has shown up to 77% improvement in site performance, which is not small change given how big today’s websites are.

EdgeCast has also been actively tuning its technology to better serve the service provider market. Earlier this year they launched a licensed CDN program after two years of development and testing, and they have since partnered up with Motorola Mobility and Dell to add further options while adding federation capabilities. The PageSpeed integration will also be made available to such partners and licensed and managed CDN customers.
