Zayo’s zColo Moves Into Pittsburgh

August 24th, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

zColo, the colo and interconnection division Zayo Group (news, filings), is entering the Pittsburgh market – marking their sixth territorial expansion of the year.  They will be offering services out of a new Meet-Me-Room located within the carrier hotel at 2500 Allegheny Center Mall.  The expansion brings zColo’s footprint to more than 170,000 square feet.

Zayo has had more than a passing interest in its Appalachian footprint this summer.  Its expansions in northern West Virginia are not so far down the road have also added depth in the area.  Pittsburgh as a bandwidth market has never really gotten the attention that a city of its size might otherwise deserve.  But they have a pretty good stable of competitive fiber providers nonetheless.

zColo grew out of the Fibernet Telecom Group acquisition, which did most of its business out of the NY metro area with an expansion out in LA – strictly Tier 1 stuff.  Since then though, Zayo has been adding Tier 2 Meet-Me rooms within its footprint that are changing that business model.  Three in Ohio, two in Tennessee, plus Pittsburgh and Minneapolis.  Seems likely they will continue that trend throughout their footprint.
