Etisalat Picks Ciena for 40G

February 14th, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Middle Eastern telecommunications giant Etisalat has deployed gear from Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings) to upgrade its transport network in the United Arab Emirates.  The new 40G backbone hooks up more than 40 locations in the UAE, which is Etisalat’s home turf of course.  Etisalat needed the upgrade to support all the bits that came with its transition to packet/IP and of course the ever-present growing wave of mobile traffic.  Still though, does the UAE have that much domestic traffic?  Wow!

This is the second deployment of Ciena gear by Etisalat-related companies recently in the region.  Just last month, the Saudi Arabian company Mobil, which Etilsalat owns about a quarter of, selected a range of the company’s gear to build out its next generation network.  They also won a piece of the SEA-WE-ME-4 upgrade alongside Alcatel-Lucent.  Apparently they knew what they were doing when they opened their doors in the Middle East over the summer.
