TDC Buys Fiber Network

The Danish telecommunications company TDC has bought itself some more fiber.  The company has agreed to acquire the network assembled by Dong Energy ^[1] for about US$85M.  What a name this company has, I had to be rather careful writing the title to this post.  Dong was rumored to be looking for a buyer in the late Spring, looks like they finally found one. The purchase will go nicely with TDC’s combined wireless and wireline networks, and brings them into the FTTH market.

Dong Energy’s network is one I did not know much about, it has never made my map lists for want of a public map.  But they bring FTTH services to a fairly large number ^[2] of people in Denmark alongside their energy business, a couple hundred thousand by now I believe.  At least 5 ISPs offer services over the network, and TDC apparently intends to continue to operate it as an open platform.

The European fiber market is still ripe for further consolidation, probably moreso than the US market in terms of the number of potential targets.  I’ll bet we see more such deals this winter.
